We Happy Few can't get an age rating in Australia

Australians may not be able to get their hands on We Happy Few, after the indie survival game was refused classification.

The survival horror, which is set in dystopian, drug-fuelled society in a 1960s English town, was rejected by the Australian Classification Board for what is believed to be its hefty depiction of drug use.

In We Happy Few you must try and survive without the hallucinogenic drug known as Joy, which allows you to ignore the chaos of the world around.

However, it appears that the Australian government are not a fan.

The refused classification listing, according to Kotaku, which appears on the board’s website, announced We Happy Few was refused a rating under the Computer Games Table 1a clause. This describes games which “depict, express or otherwise deal with matters of sex, drug misuse or addiction, crime, cruelty, violence or revolting or abhorrent phenomena in such a way that they offend against the standards of morality, decency and propriety generally accepted by reasonable adults to the extent that they should not be classified.”

The classification does not rule out an Australian release for We Happy Few  in the future: developer Compulsion Games could make changes to remove the offending content and resubmit it to the board for reclassification.

We Happy Few launched into Early Access on PC last year, but it is unknown whether this setback will have an affect on the expected summer release this year.
