PUBG Corp has filed a lawsuit against Fortnite developer Epic Games. The suit was filed against Epic Games Korea by the Seoul Central District Court back in January, as PUBG Corp asked the court to determine whether Fortnite Battle Royale was infringing on PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.
If you’ve been living under a rock for the past year, you won’t remember that PUBG rose to prominence over the summer of 2017, amassing a concurrent player count of more than 3.2 million at its peak. Fortnite was first released last July, but was limited to its PvE mode, Save the World, before Fortnite Battle Royale was released in September.
Fortnite and PUBG are the giants of the genre, but what’s the best battle royale game?
While Brendan ‘PlayerUnknown’ Greene has acknowledged that he didn’t invent the battle royale genre, he has previously acknowledged the issue of PUBG clones. In a press release issued in September, Chang Han Kim, vice president of PUBG publisher Bluehole, said that the company was worried that Fortnite was copying PUBG, stating that Bluehole was “concerned that Fortnite may be replicating the experience for which PUBG is known.”
Kim also states that Bluehole “had an ongoing relationship with Epic Games throughout PUBG’s development as they are the creators of UE4, the engine we licensed for the game.”
The Korea Times reports that the lawsuit was filed in January, with a spokesperson stating that the suit was filed “to protect [Bluehole’s] copyright.
